Two cakes can use the same flour, sugar and butter and still be worth very different prices. The difference is your hours. Here's how much to charge for a custom cake, using a simple price-per-serving formula and three real examples.

Quick answer
  • Cake price = ingredients + board and box + your hours x your rate + a share of monthly overhead, plus profit.
  • Divide the price by servings to get your price per serving. That's how most customers compare cakes.
  • The same 8-inch cake can run about $7, $10 or $13 a serving depending on the decorating, because the hours change, not the ingredients.
  • Grocery-store prices are not your competition. Cost your own cake first, then compare with local home bakers.

Why price per serving

Customers ask "how much for a cake for 20 people?" Pricing per serving answers that fast and keeps your quotes consistent across sizes and tiers. But the per-serving number should come out of your formula. Don't just copy it from a chart.

The steps

1. Cost your ingredients by the recipe

Use what you paid per package and how much the recipe uses. A 5 lb bag of flour at $4.50 is about $0.06 an ounce. Do this once for each recipe and reuse it. Include filling, frosting, and any chocolate or fruit.

Common mistake: leaving out the small stuff. Vanilla, food coloring, sprinkles and parchment add up to a few dollars a cake.

2. Add the board, box and supports

Cake boards, boxes, dowels and toppers are part of the cake. For a single 8-inch round, $3 to $5 is common.

3. Count every hour

Include baking, cooling, leveling, filling, crumb coat, decorating, and cleanup, plus customer messages and shopping. Pick an hourly rate you'd accept from an employer. Many home bakers start around $18 to $25 an hour, and skilled decorators charge more.

4. Add a share of monthly overhead

Permits, insurance, pans, mixer wear, electricity and packaging supplies are real costs. Add them up for a typical month and divide by the number of orders you take. $300 a month across 15 orders is $20 a cake.

5. Add profit

Your wage pays you. Profit pays the business: new tools, slow weeks, and a mistake you have to remake. Add at least 20% on top of cost.

6. Divide by servings

An 8-inch round is usually around 20 party servings, and wedding slices are smaller, so the same cake yields more. Use a serving chart so your count matches what you promise.

Worked example: one 8-inch cake, three designs

All three use $22 an hour, a $20 overhead share and 20% profit, and serve 20.

Design Ingredients, board and box Hours Cost Price (+20%) Per serving
Simple buttercream, smooth sides, writing $20 3.5 = $77 $117 $140 $7.02
Piped flowers, drip and topper $24 5.5 = $121 $165 $198 $9.90
Fondant with handmade figures $30 7.5 = $165 $215 $258 $12.90

Ingredients only moved $10. The price moved $118. That's why a flat "$X per cake" price loses money on detailed designs.

What if my price looks too high?

Published guides put simple custom buttercream cakes at roughly $4 to $8 a serving, with fondant, sculpted and wedding work higher. If your number is well above your local market, check your hours first. Batch baking, freezing layers, and simpler designs at a set "starting at" price all bring cost down without cutting your wage.

If your number is below the market, raise it. Undercharging doesn't win better customers. It just fills your calendar with work that doesn't pay.
