How to Price Custom Stencils: Mylar and Vinyl Stencil Costs and Prices

Custom stencils look simple: a sheet of mylar and a cut file. But detailed stencils take a long time to weed, bridges have to be designed in, and large wall stencils use expensive sheets. This guide shows how to price reusable mylar stencils and one-use adhesive stencils by size, with the design and cutting time included.

Why stencils are often underpriced

The material in a small stencil can cost less than a dollar, so sellers price them like stickers. But stencils need bridges so the center of letters doesn't fall out, and tiny islands are slow to weed. A detailed design can take three times longer than a simple one of the same size.

The steps

1. Pick the material

Reusable stencils use mylar, commonly 5 to 14 mil thick. Thicker mylar lasts longer but cuts slower. One-use stencils use adhesive stencil vinyl, which costs less and gives sharp lines on wood and glass.

2. Cost the sheet

Divide the pack price by the number of sheets. A 12 x 12 in sheet of 7 mil mylar often costs $1 to $3 in packs. Big wall stencils need larger sheets or several joined sheets.

3. Charge for design
