It isn't. That $12 print also ate 40 minutes of a printer that isn't free to run, plus the time you spent slicing, watching for failures, and packaging the thing. Undercharging on 3D prints doesn't show up as a loss on paper — it shows up as a business that never has cash for a second printer.

1. Weigh the print and price the material
Weigh the finished piece plus supports on a gram scale, then multiply by your cost per gram. A $22 spool of PLA holding 1,000 grams runs about $0.022/gram, so a 120-gram print costs roughly $2.64 in filament alone.
Resin printers run differently — a liter of standard resin costing $30-40 works out to $0.03-0.04/mL, and you're also burning through gloves, funnels, and cleaning alcohol every batch. Common mistake: pricing resin prints like FDM prints and forgetting the consumables.
2. Add machine time cost
Multiply your printer's wattage by hours run, convert to kWh, then multiply by your electricity rate. A 200W printer running 6 hours uses 1.2 kWh — at $0.16/kWh that's about $0.19 in electricity.
That number looks tiny, which is why people skip it. It's not the electricity that matters here — it's that the printer occupying 6 hours can't run a second job in that window, and that's real opportunity cost even on a hobby-scale operation.
3. Build in a failure buffer
Even dialed-in printers fail 10-20% of the time on complex geometry, according to widely cited maker community estimates for print farms. If one in five prints fails, your successful prints need to absorb the cost of the failed ones.

7. Sanity-check against the market
Search three to five comparable listings for size, detail level, and material before you publish your price. If your formula-based number sits 40% above every comparable, either your labor estimate is inflated or you're targeting the wrong buyer.
