Soap is a great product to sell because it is consumable and people come back for more. It is also easy to underprice, because a single bar's ingredients seem cheap. This guide shows how to price handmade soap from your recipe, for cold process, melt and pour and goat milk bars, with wholesale and market prices you can use.
- Soap price per bar = (batch ingredients ÷ bars) + wrap and label + (batch time ÷ bars) + overhead, then profit and fees.
- A 4.5 oz cold process bar costs about $4.12 to make and sells for about $6. A goat milk bar sells for about $8.
- Fragrance oil is often the most expensive ingredient. Cost it by weight.
- Cold process soap needs to cure for weeks, so you need cash for stock before it can sell. Price for that.
Why soap is often underpriced
A bar might use 60 cents of oils, so $5 seems like plenty. But fragrance, colorants, wrap, labels and your share of batch time add up. Soap makers also lose bars to soda ash, cracks and trimming.
There is also the cure time. Cold process bars usually cure for 4 to 6 weeks before they are ready, so your money sits on a shelf. A healthy profit covers that.
The steps
1. Cost the batch from your recipe
List every oil, butter and lye by weight. Multiply each by its cost per ounce. Add water or milk, fragrance, colorants and additives.
2. Divide by the bars you actually get
Count the bars after trimming. If a 3 lb batch makes 11 bars after trimming, divide by 11, not 12.
3. Add wrap and label
Paper bands, shrink wrap, boxes and labels often add $0.25 to $0.75 per bar.
4. Split your batch time
Time the whole batch: weighing, mixing, pouring, cutting, curing care, beveling and wrapping. Divide by the number of bars.
5. Add overhead, profit and fees
Molds, scales, stick blenders, safety gear and insurance are overhead. Add 10%, then 25% to 35% profit, then divide by 0.90 for online fees.
Worked example: three soap bars
Per bar, from batches of 10 to 12. $20 an hour, 10% overhead, 30% profit and 10% fees.

Labor per bar is small because it is shared across the batch. That is why bigger batches lower your cost. Fragrance and packaging are the lines to watch when suppliers raise prices.

What you keep on each sales channel
The same cold process bar at $6.00 leaves different money in your pocket depending on where it sells. This uses the $4.12 cost to make from the example above, with Etsy's current transaction, processing and listing fees and Square's in-person card rate. Shipping, sales tax and ads are left out.

On Etsy, fees take about 17% of a $6.00 sale. The fixed $0.45 per order hits small items hardest, so bundles and multi-packs keep more of each sale. If a sale comes through Etsy Offsite Ads, add another 15% (12% for shops over $10,000 a year), so build that into your price if you're enrolled. Wholesale at half of retail loses $1.12 per piece here. Either raise retail, lower your cost, or set a separate wholesale price with a case minimum. Soap wholesales well in sets of 6 or 12 bars per scent. A case minimum keeps wholesale worth your time.
Bulk and custom order pricing
For a wedding favor order of mini soap bars, custom label design and a test batch takes about 1.5 hr at $20.00/hr. Charge that once per order, then spread it across the pieces. Materials are $0.85 per piece and hands-on time is 3.6 minutes. Overhead is 10%, profit 30%, and 3% covers card or invoice fees.

The price per piece falls from $4.79 to $3.32 because the setup is shared, not because you cut your rate. Quote the tier the customer actually orders, ask for a 50% deposit before you buy blanks, and set a minimum order size for custom work.
